3D zebra crossings turn heads in Barishal
From a distance, they look like solid obstacles on the road, but closer inspection reveals them to be mere optical illusions of three-dimensional paintings.
The newly-painted 3D zebra crossings are the latest road safety initiative taken by Barishal City Corporation, the first of its kind in Bangladesh.
BCC Mayor Serniabat Sadiq Abdullah unveiled the work on Friday.
According BCC sources, initially there will be 3D zebra crossings at five intersections: Zilla School-Barishal Club-Police Line, Kakoli, Bibir Pukur, Jailkhana, and Amtala.
The BCC mayor said, “We are introducing these zebra crossings as a modern solution to ensure road safety and prevent road accidents. These are already being used in some developed countries.”
“This is an experimental initiative; if it is successful then we will introduce it on different roads of the city,” he added.
Barishal Metropolitan Police‘s (BMP) Deputy Commissioner of Traffic Khairul Islam said, “These will have better visibility than traditional marking patterns. However, there is still a need for awareness among drivers and pedestrians.”
Humayun Kabir, executive engineer of BCC, said, “BCC is the first to introduce this type of zebra crossing in the country. It costs around Tk 900 per square feet and will remain visible for at least three years.”
Sujon Bepari, a microbus driver, said this zebra crossing is definitely more visible than traditional ones. “We can see the it from far away and control the car’s speed.”
Truck driver Sayed Hossain echoed this observation, saying this marking helps drivers slow down at the right time.
Pedestrians who were crossing the road were also seen curiously observing the new style of zebra crossings, and welcomed this initiative, saying it would make the streets safer .
