30 schoolgirls learn karate for self-defense
“I no longer have to worry about stalkers or harassers on the streets now that I know basic self-defense techniques,” said ninth-grader Mohima Akter of Savar Girls High School, after a group of thirty students of the school received a short training on karate.
Organised by Chobighor, a youth organisation, and Champions Karate-do, the three-day long training taught the girls the basics of the martial art, along with self-defense. The programme started last Tuesday at the school’s playground.
All participants were handed certificates and crests, said the organisers.
Mohammad Ibrahim, a black belt holder and chief coordinator of Champions Karate-do, said, “Our training aims to teach girls ways to defend themselves.”
Prince Ghosh, founder and president of Chobighor said, “Violence against women and girls is increasing in society. We took this initiative to give girls free karate training.”
Students and teachers of the school welcomed the initiative, and the girls expressed interest in further training in the martial art.
