Nation recalls Aug 15 tragedy

The government and different political and socio-cultural organisations across the country yesterday observed the 41st martyrdom of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and National Mourning Day with due solemnity.

Mourners demanded execution of the convicted fugitive killers of Bangabandhu, now hiding abroad.

Wearing black badges, thousands of leaders, workers and supporters of the ruling Awami League and people from all strata placed wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu in front of his historic residence on the capital's Dhanmondi Road 32 from morning to dusk.

Dhaka Electric Supply Company Limited (Desco) held seminars, a voluntary blood donation programme and a doa mahfil.

Desco Chairman of the Board and Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Additional Secretary Md Mahbub-ul-Alam launched the programme.

Sheikh Russel Shishu Sangsad placed wreaths at the portrait and Russel's graveyard in Banani.

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University gave free treatment to 5,675 out-patients yesterday. More than 500 physicians participated in the programme.

Amra Muktijuddhar Santan formed a human chain in front of Jatiya Press Club demanding erecting a “hate tomb” to despise Bangabandhu's killers.

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Maritime University held a milad and doa mahfil, an essay competition, a discussion and short film presentation on Bangabandhu's life on its Pallabi temporary campus in Dhaka.

Vice Chancellor Rear Admiral ASM Abdul Baten was present as the chief guest.

Bangla Academy organised a recitation, musical programme, and documentary screening at the Abdul Karim Sahityabisharad Auditorium.

Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University in Tangail held a rally, a discussion and a photo exhibition, inaugurated by VC Dr Md Alauddin.

Mahanagar Sarbajanin Puja Committee offered special prayers for Bangabandhu and his family members who were murdered on August 15, 1975.

Border Guard Bangladesh, Workers Party of Bangladesh, BIRDEM General Hospital, Bangladesh Export Processing Zones Authority, and Alampana Tower Flat Owners' Association in Segunbagicha also observed the day with different programmes.

Our diplomatic correspondent reports, Bangladesh missions abroad including in Thailand and Mumbai observed National Mourning Day. They hoisted the national flag half-mast, read out the messages from the president and the prime minister, and held discussions and milad mahfils.
