Man going missing in manhole found dead
Divers yesterday recovered a man's body from a manhole at Chalantika intersection in Mirpur-7 in the capital, around 24 hours after he went missing there while cleaning a sewerage line.
The identity of the deceased, aged around 25, could not be known yet.
The man got into the manhole around 3:30pm on Tuesday for cleaning the sewerage line as water-logging was caused by heavy rains but later he went missing, Syed Shaheed Alam, officer-in-charge of Rupnagar Police Station, told The Daily Star yesterday.
On information, four fire-fighting units rushed to the spot and failed to rescue him till 10:00pm Tuesday.
The fire fighters resumed the rescue operation around 7:30am yesterday and recovered the body from the waterline around 3:30pm, the OC added.
Citing locals, Abdullah Al Arafin, senior station officer of Mirpur fire station, said staff of a nearby garment hired the homeless man, promising to give Tk 500 for clearing the sewerage line.
Locals called in the fire service personnel as he had not come out from the manhole even after one hour, he said.
