DU student continues hunger strike demanding fresh 'Gha' unit admission test

A student of Dhaka University (DU) continued his solitary hunger strike for the second straight day yesterday, demanding fresh test for "Gha" unit admission. The result was published on Tuesday.

Akhtar Hossen, a third-year student of law department, began the hunger strike in front of Raju memorial sculpture at TSC on the campus, three hours before the publication of the admission test results.

DU Vice Chancellor Md Akhtaruzzaman yesterday admitted that there was a “digital forgery” during the admission tests, but published the results anyway, which saw the unit's highest pass rate in the last five years.

Akhtar also demanded punishment to those who were involved in the “question leak” and appropriate measures from the authorities to stop such incidents in future.

He told this newspaper that he was driven by his conscience to start the hunger strike.

“Such question leaks deprive the deserving candidates, which is unfair,” he said. He will end his strike only when the authorities assure him of conducting the admission test afresh, he added.

Leaders of quota reform movement expressed their solidarity with Akhtar and threatened to launch tougher agitations, if the university authorities do not hold fresh admission tests to the unit.

No one from the university authorities met Akhtar, as of filing this report till 7:00pm yesterday.
