Uber generated Tk 5,500 crore in economic activity in 2024: report

Uber contributed Tk 5,500 crore to Bangladesh's economy in 2024, according to a study by Public First, a UK-based policy research firm.
The Uber Economic Impact Report was released at an event in The Westin Dhaka.
The report highlights Uber's role in job creation, tourism, and improved mobility. The company's Moto and Auto services alone contributed Tk 920 crore in economic activity, catering to the rising demand for affordable last-mile connectivity.
Additionally, Uber riders saved approximately 11 lakh hours in travel time, valued at Tk 94 crore, with 82 percent using the service for commuting, according to a press release.
In terms of earnings, the report found that driver-partners made 42 percent more annually through Uber compared to their next best alternative.
Half of the surveyed drivers said they would have fewer job opportunities without the platform, while 76 percent stated Uber was their first source of app-based income.
Uber also played a role in tourism, generating Tk 290 crore in additional value for the sector. The report further noted that 95 percent of female riders prioritise safety when using Uber, and 89 percent consider it the safest way to travel home.
Addressing the event, Bangladesh Road Transport Authority Chairman Mohammed Yasin acknowledged Uber's role in improving connectivity and supporting livelihoods.
Nasheed Ferdous Kamal, Uber Bangladesh's country head, said the company remains committed to reshaping mobility and fostering economic growth.
Md Ehsanul Hoque, senior secretary of the Road Transport and Highways Division was also present at the event.
