Terry towel makers also want easy conditions for raw materials import
Following suit of garment makers, the terry towel makers also urged the government to ease the rules for yarn import through land port from India because of rising local prices of basic raw materials.
Bangladesh Terry Towel and Linen Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BTTLMEA) made the call today in letters to the commerce minister, commerce secretary, finance minister, finance secretary and the chairman of the National Board of Revenue (NBR).
"We have a lot of work orders now from the international retailers and brands. At this moment, we need a lot of yarn at competitive prices," said M Shahadat Hossain Sohel, chairman of BTTLMEA.
"However, the local spinners are facing difficulties in supplying the yarn at competitive prices, for which we may lose our work orders to our competing countries," Sohel told The Daily Star.
The factory owners, those who do not have bond licence, should be given the opportunity to import yarn at a reduced rate so that they can be more competitive in the international market, he said.
Moreover, like the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), the BTTLMEA also demanded the government allow import of Indian yarn through Bhomra and Sonamasjid land ports.
Earlier, BGMEA placed similar demands to the government on August 15.
