Stocks fell for fourth consecutive week

The DSEX dropped 55 points to close the week at 4,918

Stocks declined for the fourth consecutive week as investor confidence remained subdued.

The DSEX, the benchmark index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), dropped 55 points, or 1.10 percent, to close the last week at 4,918.

The market closed in the red on three out of four trading days, with the bourse remaining shut on Thursday on the occasion of May Day.

The DS30 index, comprising 30 prominent companies, went down by 22 points to close at 1,823. The DSES Index, which tracks Shariah-compliant firms, lost 11 points to end at 1,094.

Out of 394 issues traded at the DSE, 199 declined, 158 advanced, and 37 remained unchanged.

Turnover at the prime bourse dropped to Tk 1,410 crore this week from Tk 1,718 crore a week ago due to fewer trading sessions.

However, the average daily turnover edged up by 2.6 percent to Tk 353 crore.

Investors were mostly active in the banking sector, which accounted for 16 percent of the week's total turnover, followed by the food sector (14 percent) and power sector (11 percent).

The telecom sector registered the highest loss of 5.13 percent, followed by non-bank financial institutions, food, banking, and engineering sectors.

Shares of Midland Bank rose the highest, gaining 17 percent, while Progressive Life Insurance Company suffered the steepest decline, plunging 25.12 percent.

The port city bourse, Chittagong Stock Exchange, also closed lower, with the CSE All Share Price Index (CASPI) shedding 151 points to end at 13,805.
