Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi today laid the foundation stone of the fifth border haat between Bangladesh and India at the Kurmaghat point under Moulvibazar in Bangladesh.

The people of bordering areas of both countries will be able to buy fruits, vegetables, spices, towels, lungis, different clothing items, plastic goods, fish, melamine products, honey and other basic commodities if this haat is operated.

Addressing the programme, Munshi said India is the second-biggest import source after China. In fiscal 2010-11, Indo-Bangla bilateral trade was $5.1 billion and in the last fiscal 2020-21, the amount stood at $9.9 billion.

Currently, four border haats are in operation in different areas along Bangladesh and Indian bordering areas. The people of bordering areas in Bangladesh's Kurigram, Brahmanbaria, Feni and Sunamganj have been enjoying the benefits of border haats between the two countries.
