Govt plans to allow private imports of petroleum products: energy minister

The government is planning to allow the private sector to import petroleum products in a bid to reduce the subsidy burden, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hasan Mahmud said today.

There are also plans to privatise power distribution to ease the subsidy burden, he said.

The government currently imports and produces energy and electricity at higher costs but sells them at lower prices, which has driven up the subsidy burden in the energy sector.

The minister was speaking at a discussion on energy security organised by Bangla newspaper Bonik Barta at the Pan Pacific Sonargaon Dhaka.
