India urges IMF to immediately provide financial assistance to Sri Lanka
India today urged the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to urgently provide financial assistance to the economic crisis-hit Sri Lanka.
This was conveyed by Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman during her bilateral meeting with Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of IMF, on the sidelines of the International Monetary Fund-World Bank (IMF-WB) Spring Meetings in Washington.
"Sitharaman indicated that IMF should support and urgently provide financial assistance to Sri Lanka. The Managing Director assured the Indian Finance Minister that IMF would continue to actively engage with Sri Lanka," according to a readout issued by the Indian Finance Ministry.
During the meeting, the IMF MD particularly brought reference to the help India is providing to Sri Lanka during their difficult economic crisis, reports our New Delhi correspondent.
India has provided nearly USD two billion in financial assistance and fuel to Sri Lanka and is considering another two billion dollars for the island nation.
During the meeting, Sitharaman and Georgieva discussed issues of importance for India besides several issues currently being faced by the global and the regional economies.
