Deal to promoteglobal standards of electrical products
The South Asian Regional Standards Organisation (Sarso) and International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) have recently signed an agreement to promote the development and adoption of global standards for electrical products in the region.
The two organisations signed the agreement on October 9 in Frankfurt, Germany.
Frans Vreeswijk, general secretary and chief executive of IEC, and Syed Humayun Kabir, director general of Sarso, signed the agreement on behalf of their respective organisations, according to a press release.
“This agreement will be helpful to strengthen the cooperation between IEC and Sarso in a number of areas, covering especially cross representation and exchange of information,” said Sarso, headquartered in Dhaka.
Sarso, a specialised body of Saarc member states, was established to promote and take steps to harmonise national standards of the Saarc member states with a view to removing the technical barriers to trade and facilitating the flow of goods and services in the region.
The IEC, the international standards and conformity assessment body for all fields of electrotechnology, serves world markets and society through its standardisation and conformity assessment work for all electrical, electronic and related technologies.
Sarso said the main purpose of the cooperation agreement between the two organisations is to promote the development, use and adoption of international standards as well as the use of IEC conformity assessment systems to facilitate world trade.
Another objective is to accelerate the electro-technical standardisation process in the South Asia region, Sarso said.
Both the organisations will consider the possibility of developing a joint activity programme through this agreement, it added.
