Boy drowns after jumping into lake with girlfriend

A teenage boy drowned in the capital's Hatirjheel Lake yesterday while his girlfriend narrowly escaped death after they jumped off a bridge there in order to commit suicide as their families disapproved of their relationships.
The deceased is Ahsanul Haque Tonmoy, 14, a class X student of a school in New Eskaton area. His classmate Meherin Rahman Mim of the same age was rescued by onlookers.
Sub-inspector Mohammad Jahangir of Badda Police Station said the two jumped off bridge no-1 around 6:00am, and hearing the sound, some rickshaw-van pullers rescued the girl but the boy went missing.
Fire service divers recovered the body of Tonmoy after half an hour of efforts and sent it to Dhaka Medical College morgue for autopsy, according to witnesses.   
Mim was detained and sued over charges of "provoking the boy into committing suicide and for attempting to kill herself", said MA Jalil, officer-in-charge of Badda Police Station Quoting the girl, police said the two developed a love affair about a year ago. As Mim's family did not accept it and she was supposed to get married to a businessman in a couple of days, both of them left their houses on Thursday afternoon and decided to commit suicide. Mim was engaged to a businessman in Mouchak area around five months ago.
