Storm triggered by Yaas: over 2,500 houses damaged in Cox’s Bazar

Around 2,570 houses of Cox's Bazar were damaged by the storm triggered by cyclone "Yaas" that weakened into a deep depression over India's north Odisha and adjoining Jharkhand area this morning.
Upazila administration primarily disclosed the number based on information collected by field-level public representatives, said Deputy Commissioner of Cox's Bazar Md Mamunur Rashid.
Cross dams in Matarbari, Chowfaldandi, Kutubdia and Maheshkhali have also been damaged.
Senior Secretary of water resources ministry Kabin Bin Anwar has been informed about the situation and he may visit the damaged embankments, reports our Cox's Bazar correspondent quoting the DC.
Field-level work is going on to assess the loss -- due to the damage caused by the storm -- in salt, fish, cultivation, forest and rural roads sector.
The findings will be formally revealed in three to four days, he said.
While talking to our correspondent, Md Jafar Iqbal Bhuiyan, deputy general manager of Cox's Bazar Salt Development Project under state-run Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC), said 2,096 metric tonnes of salt -- worth Tk 85 lakh -- has been damaged in 16 unions of Sadar, Pekua, Maheshkhali, Chakaria and Teknaf upazilas.
Noor Ahmed, chairman of St Martin's Union Parishad under Teknaf, said erosion has taken a serious turn at 10 points. "The island never faced this kind of erosion in the last 50 years."
The lone jetty of the island, a mosque and a number of trawlers and boats were also damaged in the storm.
