Self-sufficiency in rice production may take 3-5 years: agricultural minister
Agricultural minister today said that attaining self-sufficiency in rice production might take three to five years for Bangladesh.
Bangladesh Rice Research Institute has invented a new type of rice which is more high-yielding than the existing kinds, Mohammad Abdur Razzaque said during a press briefing, adding that when its production will begin in wide-range, Bangladesh will not need to import rice.
Earlier, authorities and ministers had said that Bangladesh is self-sufficient in rice production and government was thinking of exporting it.
But in reality, as rice production has been hampered due to recurring natural disasters, government and private sectors started importing rice. Government even had to cut import duty to control the market price of rice.
