Hefajat mayhem in Brahmanbaria: 11 cases filed so far, 21 arrested

A total of 11 cases have been filed so far in connection with the destruction carried out by Hefajat-e Islam activists in Brahmanbaria over three days till Sunday.
Over 10,000 people were made accused in the cases, Officer-in-Charge of Special Branch of Brahmanbaria District Police, Mohammad Imtiaz Ahmed, confirmed to The Daily Star.
So far, 21 people were arrested in connection with the cases, the police officer said.
Eight cases were filed with Sadar Model Police Station for vandalising and arson attacks on government and private establishments, and house of the district Awami League president, according to the local police control room.
Two cases were filed with Ashuganj Police Station in connection with the attack on toll plaza of Syed Nazrul Islam Bridge and a nearby police outpost in Ashuganj, and another case was filed with Sarail Police Station on charges of vandalism and arson attack on highway police station at Sarail Biswa Road intersection.
Among the arrestees, 18 were arrested by Sadar police while three by Ashuganj police, police control room said.
Clashes involving Hefajat left nine people, including a 14-year-old boy, dead in Brahmanbaria during the period but families of the victims are yet to file any case.
