Hefajat leader resigns seeking justice over mayhem in Brahmanbaria
Hefajat-e-Islam Brahmanbaria district unit's Joint General Secretary Mufti Abdur Rahim Quasemi, who was released from Jamiya Islamia Younusia Madrasa a few months ago, has resigned seeking justice for those involved in the violence carried out by Hefajat-e-Islam activists in Brahmanbaria from March 26 to 28.
He announced his resignation in a written statement to local journalists today. He was scheduled to hold a press conference this morning but was unable to attend due to physical illness.
In a written statement, the influential leader of Hefazat-e-Islam said, "The extreme rampage caused by Hefajat-e-Islam across the country over the visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of independence is unprecedented and inhumane. Islam does not allow the loss of life and damage to properties in any way."
He said that neither he nor any student of madrasas under his supervision participated in the vandalism and arson attack that took place during Hefajat's strike.
"I am not involved in any of the ongoing activities of Hefajat-e-Islam. I am officially resigning from all the activities of Hefajat and from the posts of national and district committees," he added.
Quasemi also urged the government to identify and bring to justice those involved in the violence.
