Demanding extended Eid leave: 26 injured in clash between garment workers, police in Tongi

Twenty-six people were injured during a clash between garments workers and police in Gazipur's Tongi today, witnesses said.
Of them, 18 workers are receiving treatment at Tongi Ahsan Ullah Master General Hospital and Dhaka Medical College and Hospital, our Gazipur correspondent reports.
According to witnesses, workers of a factory demonstrated in Millgate area around 11:00am, demanding extended leave on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr.
When the workers started to move to the highway, police intercepted them, the witnesses said.
Facing obstruction, the demonstrators hurled brick chunks at the law enforcers and blocked Dhaka-Mymensingh highway around 12:15pm.
Eight members of Industrial Police sustained injuries during the clash, said Jalal Hawlader, additional superintendent of Gazipur Industrial Police.
He said that police fired teargas shells and rubber bullets to disperse the workers.
