HC bars way for BNP's Ashfaq to contest polls

The High Court today stayed for three months the Election Commission’s decision that allowed BNP candidate Khandker Abu Ashfaq to contest the election for Dhaka-1 constituency.

Ashfaq cannot contest the December 30 election following the HC order, Deputy Attorney General Motaher Hossain Sazu told The Daily Star.

The HC bench of Justice JBM Hassan and Justice Md Khairul Alam passed the order following a writ petition filed by Bikolpo Dhara Bangladesh (BDB) candidate Jalal Uddin challenging the EC’s decision.

In the petition, Jalal claimed that as Ashfaq is holding the office of Nawabganj upazila chairman, he is ineligible for contesting the polls.
