Shamsuzzaman Khan laid to eternal rest
Prof Shamsuzzaman Khan, president of Bangla Academy, passed away Wednesday afternoon with Covid-19 infection.
He breathed his last around 2:00pm at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, confirmed Bangla Academy Public Relations Officer Pias Majid.
He was 81 years old and left behind his wife and three daughters.
Prof Shamsuzzaman succeeded National Professor Anisuzzaman, who served as President of Bangla Academy from 2012 till his demise in May last year.
He was born on December 29, 1940, in Manikganj district. He began his career as a teacher. He taught at Munshiganj Horganga College in Munshiganj, Jagannath College in Dhaka, and Bangladesh Agricultural University.
Prof Shamsuzzaman Khan served as Director General of Bangla Academy for 10 years. He is renowned for editing a book series on folk culture of 64 different districts in 64 volumes, and collections of folklore series in 114 volumes.
He was awarded Bangla Academy Literary Award in 2001, Ekushey Padak in 2009, and Independence Day Award in 2017.
He also served as the director general of Bangladesh National Museum and Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy.
Prof Shamsuzzaman Khan was also appointed as "Bangabandhu Chair" Professor at Islamic University and was nominated as a syndicate member of Dhaka University.
His body was buried at his family graveyard in Manikganj on Wednesday evening.
Eminent Folklorist and Bangla Academy President Professor Shamsuzzaman Khan, who died due to Covid-19 complications was laid to rest next to his mother's grave in their village in Manikganj Wednesday evening.
Shamsuzzaman Khan also awarded with Swadhinata Padak and Ekushey Padak for his contribution to literature died at the age of 81, on Wednesday afternoon. He died while undergoing treatment at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University. And he was buried at a graveyard of Charigram of Singair, said Pais Majid, public relation of Bangla Academy. He left behind his wife, who is also infected with Covid 19 and three daughters. President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday expressed deep shock and sorrow over the death of Shamsuzzaman Khan in separate condolence messages. A host of cabinet members and others also expressed shock at the death.
"He was one of my first students", National Professor Rafiqul Islam told The Daily Star. "He was very active and sincere in his literary pursuits and Bangla Academy has seen a lot of progress under his guidance. Particularly in the promotion of folk art and history, and the publication of books on Bangabandhu. I never thought we would lose him so early". He has written and edited more than a hundred books including "Folklore Charcha", "Bangabandhur Rastrochinta O Bartaman Bangladesh", "Muktobhuddhi Dharmaniropekkhata O Samakal", "Rangaroser Galpasamgra", "Bangladesher Utsab", "Bangla Shon O Panjika" and "Folklore Chinta".Prof Shamsuzzaman Khan was also appointed as 'Bangabandhu Chair' Professor at Islamic University and was nominated as a syndicate member of Dhaka University.
