Help regularise undocumented Bangladeshis
Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen has called upon the US authorities to help legalise the undocumented Bangladeshis residing there.
He made the call yesterday during a meeting with US Congresswoman Grace Meng (Democrat), who represents a large number of Bangladeshi diaspora voters in New York, and always have been an active member of Bangladesh caucus in US Congress.
"Appreciating the Biden administration's liberal approach to immigration, Foreign Minister Momen called upon Congresswoman Meng to make efforts to legalise undocumented Bangladeshi diaspora in the US through taking up the matter with the new US government," said a foreign ministry statement.
Momen is currently visiting Washington DC on an official trip to reach out to the Biden administration and further enhance the bilateral relations and to convey Bangladesh's willingness to work closely with the US administration.
Momen and Meng discussed ways and means of further improving political and economic ties between the two countries.
Bangladesh foreign minister, referring to the celebration of birth centenary of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the golden jubilee of independence of Bangladesh, invited Congresswoman Meng to visit Bangladesh with a group of US lawmakers.
He told the Congresswoman to come and see the remarkable socio-economic progress achieved under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, and also the situation of the displaced Rohingyas.
Momen also briefed the US lawmaker on Bangladesh's success in tackling the Covid-19 challenge as well as on the conducive environment existing for foreign investment in the country.
