‘Drug dealer' shot dead in 'gunfight'

An alleged drug smuggler was killed in what police said was a “gunfight” between two groups of drug traders in Meherpur's Gangni upazila early yesterday.

The dead, Budu Sheikh, 35, was a resident of Pirtala village of the upazila.

Sub-Inspector Ajay Das, in-charge of Pirtala police camp, said they were informed about the “gunfight” in Harabhanga village around 2:30am. A police team rushed to the spot soon after and found a body lying there.

The body was taken to Meherpur General Hospital for an autopsy, the SI said, adding that police also recovered 1 kg of cannabis, 20 bottles of phensedyl and a firearm from the spot.

Budu was accused in seven drug cases filed with Gangni police station, Ajay said.
