Poetry recitation programme in the city
VAAB Bangladesh (VAAB) and the Rotary Club of Wheelers Hill in Australia recently organised a national poetry recitation competition for high school students of Bangladesh, at the VAAB Training Center in Adabor. Twenty nine students from different schools in villages in Nilphamari, Kurigram, Satkhira and Polash as well as the capital took part in the daylong competition. VAAB expects this to be an annual event with competitions held not only in Dhaka but also in different towns connected with rural schools.
The venture is spearheaded by three NRBs: Dr. Jasimuz Zaman, Amin Rahman and Dr. Mushfiqur Rahman, all former BUET graduates. The aim is to redress the English divide between rural and urban students involving pronunciation, conversation and grammar.
Syed Badrul Ahsan, Associate Editor of The Asian Age and a reputed columnist, in his closing address appreciated the efforts of the trio and advised the students to read books and work diligently.
The competition was conducted by Amin Rahman. The participants took part in a competitive spirit attempting to recite all the verses with correct pronunciation.
The Country Director of VAAB, Dr. Jasimuz Zaman, expressed his firm belief that the rural schools with programmes of VAAB can attain parity with urban schools in English skills within a period of three years. As the results of the competition show, what is needed is some guidance on tools and techniques, some training and a strong commitment on the part of the students and their teachers.
