Salahuddin Lavlu looks back on his glorious journey
Noted actor-director Salahuddin Lavlu began his journey with Aranyak Natyadal. He soon joined the television industry and was well received by the audience for his spontaneity and brilliance. Taking one leap at a time, the artiste began directing television drama serials and captivated the masses with his directorial debut, Molla Barir Bou. Celebrating his journey so far, Salahuddin Lavlu takes a walk down memory lane in a recent conversation with The Daily Star.
With his father being a government official, Salahuddin Lavlu had to travel quite a lot while growing up. "When my father was posted in Narail, I used to spend hours on the banks of the Chitra river," he shares. "I had the opportunity to take a speedboat ride with my father. I still remember the excitement and fear when I took that ride. It has been years since I last visited that place."
After a while, his family had to relocate to Jhenaidah for three years. They soon shifted again to Magura. "I have studied till the seventh grade in Magura. Incidentally, that is where I found celebrated actor Azizul Hakim as my classmate," says Salahuddin Lavlu, who is also the president of Directors' Guild Bangladesh. "I miss our cycling expeditions, danguli gaming sessions and hunting experiences from that time."
His next stop was at Jashore. "I once got lost after we moved to Jashore. It was a very scary experience. After looking for my father for a while, I sat at the balcony of a school and waited for him all day," he recalls. "He found me at night and took me home."
After completing his high schooling in Jashore, Salahuddin Lavlu finally shifted to Dhaka with his family. "This is where I and Azizul Hakim had the opportunity to work with Aranyak Natyadal. Aziz had a bicycle and we used to ride that when we went to TSC for rehearsals," he mentions. "Dhaka was a dreamland for us and back then. It used to be less crowded. We used to spend hours in Gulistaan and Nawabpur, chitchatting with our friends and peers."
Salahuddin Lavlu made his theatre debut with the play Ora Kodom Ali. "After that, I went on to act in Guinea Pig, Iblish and many other productions," he says. "I also took up photography as a hobby."
The actor started working with BTV in 1981 with the tele-fiction Din Raatrir Khela. The production was produced by Abdullah Yusuf Imam and directed by Mamunur Rashid. "Over the years, I have travelled a lot and progressed as an artiste. I have enjoyed every bit of my journey," he concludes.
