Remembering Kamal Das Gupta
June 20, 2019 marks the 45th death anniversary of legendary music composer-director, Kamal Das Gupta. He joined His Master’s Voice (HMV) as a music director, at the young age of eighteen. An iconic figure in the world of Bangla music, he has composed an astounding number of over 8000 songs. He became a record-holder by recording 51 songs within a span of one month only.
”It saddens me that on such a day, a man of his caliber, a son of this soil, is not celebrated to the extent that he deserves,” expresses Shafin Ahmed, son of Kamal Das Gupta and Feroza Begum. “I miss him for his unparalleled talent as a composer and beyond.”
According to Shafin, multiple eminent artistes who found recognition in the industry through Kamal Das Gupta’s compositions include Hemanta Mukherjee, Juthika Roy, Talat Mahmood, Indubala, Feroza Begum, among many others.
Kamal Das Gupta is recognised as a major composer of Nazrul Sangeet besides Kazi Nazrul Islam himself. He worked closely with the national poet for many years, marking an important phase in the history of Bangla culture.
Miles front man Shafin, released an album, Kotodin Dekhini Tomay, as a tribute to his father. However, he intends to carry out such projects more often.
