MONIHAR Experiencing movie magic at Jashore
Inaugurated in December 1983, Monihar, the renowned movie theatre near the Jashore Bus Terminal, became quite popular amongst film buffs within a short time of its launch, owing to its construction style that was ahead of the era. Audiences from different parts of the world including Japan, Korea, Africa, Australia, Russia and England are known to come to Monihar to watch movies, making the theatre one of the most influential forces of the Bangladeshi film industry. To this day, popular film stars drop by Monihar to check out the reactions of their fans to their latest release.
“Monihar is a matter of pride for our district. We are privileged to have so many people come here for a bit of an escapism through cinema,” says Zahir Iqbal Nannu, founder of Swapno Dekho, a social welfare organisation in Jessore.
Designed by Kazi Mohammad Hanif, the cinema hall is often hailed as the leading platform for Dhallywood. Whenever a new film was scheduled for release, it was almost customary that the movie premiere should be held at Monihar. After its launch, the first movie to be screened at the hall was director Dewan Nazrul's Johnny, starring Sohel Rana and Babita. The number of seats in the movie hall of 4 bigha land is 1,400 and currently, Monihar has 40 employees. . Latest films including the Jaya Ahsan and Chanchal Chowdhury starrer Debi and Shakib Khan starrer Superhero are now showing at Monihar.
For decades, Monihar has been bringing together thousands of people to share the experience of movie magic. After all, there is nothing quite like a room full of people laughing, crying and grasping at the same moments as they journey through a story together.
