A flyover to be named after ‘Polly Shamrat’ Abdul Alim
A flyover is to be named after the Ekushey Padak Award-winning singer Abdul Alim, inform his daughter singer Nurjahan Alim to the Daily Star. The singer's family had expressed their wish for one of the city's roads to being named after him a while ago, with new flyovers being a preference.
Working to achieve their aim, the singer's children Nurjahan Alim, Alzmeri Alim, and Zahir Alim had filed a petition to the Dhaka South City Corporation. A positive response from the authorities in this regard has come recently.
"The new roads and flyovers in the city are being named after prominent personas of Bangladesh and we started working towards having one in our father's name as soon as we got to know about this initiative," shares Nurjahan Alim.
So far, no such initiative to commemorate her father's legacy has been taken, shares Nurjahan Alim.
"My father voiced the thoughts and struggles of all Bangladeshis. Be it the rich or the underprivileged, listeners in the city of the rural areas, his songs were immensely appreciated by all. I believe, he is not just our but the nation's pride," she adds.
Known as one of the most prominent folk singers of the country, the singer has over 500 songs to his credit. "We have been able to revive 350 songs by my father. We hope to find and archive all his creations so that he can be remembered by future generations," says Nurjahan Alim.
Abdul Alim has been honoured with some of the most prestigious awards over the years, including the National Film Award and Independence award.
Some of his most cherished tracks are "Chirodin Pushlam Ak Achin Pakhi", "Ei Je Duniya Kishero Lagia", "Shorbonasha Padma Nodi", "Holudia Pakhi Shonar Boron", "Naiya Rey Nayer Badaam Tuila", "Duarey Aishachey Palki", "Amare Shajay Dio Nowshar Shajey", "Porer Jaiga Porer Jomi", "Mone Boro Asha Chhilo Jabo Modinai", "Shab Shakhire Par Korite Nebo Ana Ana," and "Ujaan Ganger Naiyya".
