The 2019 Oscar nominations

Nominations for the 2019 Oscars were announced recently. Roma and The Favourite each walked away with 10 nominations. The Academy also looked kindly on Green Book (five nominations), A Star Is Born (seven nominations), Bohemian Rhapsody (five nominations), BlacKkKlansman (six nominations), Black Panther (seven nominations), and Vice (eight nominations).

Rami Malek and Glenn Close, who took out best actor and actress at the Golden Globes, were both nominated for Oscars. Christian Bale (Vice), Bradley Cooper (A Star Is Born), Willem Dafoe (At Eternity's Gate), and Viggo Mortensen (Green Book) were also nominated for best actor.

Olivia Colman's nod for best actress for The Favourite followed the announcement that both Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz also received nods in the best supporting actress category for the film. Yalitza Aparicio (Roma), Glenn Close (The Wife), Lady Gaga (A Star Is Born), and Melissa McCarthy (Can You Ever Forgive Me?) are also up for best actress, while Amy Adams (Vice), Marina de Tavira (Roma), and Regina King (If Beale Street Could Talk) received attention in the best supporting actress category.

Cooper missed out on a directing nod for A Star Is Born, but Spike Lee earned his first best director nomination for BlacKkKlansman—it's also his first best picture nomination. As predicted by many industry watchers, there were no female nominees for directing; Barry Jenkins, who spearheaded 2017's best picture, Moonlight, also didn't make an appearance in the category.

Mahershala Ali (Green Book), Adam Driver (BlacKkKlansman), Sam Elliott (A Star Is Born), Richard E. Grant (Can You Ever Forgive Me), and Sam Rockwell (Vice) were nominated for best supporting actor. But fans were disappointed not to see Timothée Chalamet nominated for Beautiful Boy.

Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper's hit duet Shallow will face off for best song against nominees including All the Stars from Black Panther and The Place Where Lost Things Go from Mary Poppins Returns.

Best Picture will be a battle between Black Panther (a first for Marvel), BlacKkKlansman, Bohemian Rhapsody, Green Book, Roma, A Star Is Born, Vice, and The Favourite. There is still plenty of time to watch all the films, before the awards are handed out in February.
