3 killed, 100 injured as rival villagers clash
Three people were killed and at least 100 others injured as rival groups of villagers clashed in Mithamoin and Karimganj upazilas of the district yesterday.
The deceased are Morjina Akhter, 13, daughter of Abdur Rahim, and Robin, 10, son of Asad Mia of Sheora village under Mithamoin upazila; and Zakaria, 28, son of Roisuddin of Barghoria village under Karimganj upazila.
Mithamoin police quoted people of Sheora village as saying that two rival groups-one led by Hafij Uddin and the other by Abu Naser-clashed over an irrigation scheme at the village in the morning leaving Morjina and Robin dead and 60 others injured.
Morjina was hit by a spear and died on the spot. Robin succumbed to his injured on the way to Kishoreganj Modern Hospital.
Seven of the injured were admitted to Mithamoin Upazila Health Complex while the rest given first aid at the hospital.
No one was arrested in connection with the incident as of 5:00pm yesterday.
In Karimganj upazila, a man named Zakaria was killed and at least 40 others were injured as two groups of villagers clashed at Barghoria village yesterday following an altercation over plucking a jackfruit on Tuesday night.
Police and locals said Zakaria plucked a jackfruit from one Abdul malek Munshi's tree at the village on Tuesday night.
At around 11:00am, supporters of the two had an altercation over the issue. After a few minutes, they quipped with lethal weapons swooped on each other, leaving Zakari dead on the spot and 40 others injured.
Of the injured, two were admitted to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, nine to Kishoreganj and Karimganj hospitals while the rest given first aid.
