Protests erupt in SUST: Students cut off electricity line of VC residence
Students of the Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) in Sylhet, who have been holding protests and hunger strike demanding the resignation of the university's Vice Chancellor Prof Farid Uddin Ahmed, today cut off the electricity connection of his official residence.
Sadia Afrin, a spokesperson of the agitating students, confirmed the development to The Daily Star.
Earlier this evening, around 1,000 students held a procession on the SUST campus after 100 hours passed since the beginning of the hunger strike until death being observed by some students demanding the VC's resignation.
The protesting students today also took position in front of the VC's residence in the afternoon and are only allowing law enforcement and media personnel to enter the house.
Five teachers of the university yesterday held a discussion with Education Ministry Dr Dipu Moni over the ongoing situation at SUST, but the meeting did not solve the crisis over the students' demand for Prof Farid's resignation as SUST VC.
Following this, the students formed a human chain in front of the VC's residence around 4:30 pm today.
"We are being stuck outside and he would be continuing all activities normally, this cannot happen. From today no one can meet the VC or enter his residence," said a spokesperson of the protesting students.
The students then announced at a press briefing that they would disconnect the utilities of the VC's residence if he would not hand over his resignation.
They later cut off the power connection in the evening.
