Legendary Indian classical vocalist Pandit Jasraj died today following a cardiac arrest at his home in New Jersey, his daughter Durga Jasraj said. He was 90.

"Bapuji is no more," Durga, also a musician, said.

"With profound grief we inform that Sangeet Martand Pandit Jasraj ji breathed his last this morning at 5:15 Eastern Standard Time due to a cardiac arrest at his home in New Jersey, USA," a statement issued by Pandit Jasraj's family said in New Delhi.

Pandit Jasraj, who belonged to Mewati gharana, was in the US when the coronavirus-induced lockdown was placed and decided to stay back in that country.

One of India's greatest music personalities, Pandit Jasraj's musical career spanned eight decades and he was conferred with Indian government's prestigious honours like Padma Bibhusan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Sri.

Expressing his condolences, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, "Not only were his renditions outstanding, he also made a mark as an exceptional mentor to several other vocalists."

Pandit Jasraj was introduced to music by his father and was later trained as a tabla accompanist under the tutelage of his elder brother Pandit Pratap Narayan.

He began training as a vocalist at the age of 14.

Classic music experts say Pandit Jasraj will be remembered for adding elements of thumri to khayal, giving it more flexibility and making it more audience-friendly.

A minor planet between Mars and Jupiter was named after the famed Pandit Jasraj last year.

"It was made official by International Astronomy Union on September 23, followed by a citation," Durga Jasraj had said earlier.

Reacting to the naming of the planet, Pandit Jasraj had said, "This is beyond my dreams. In this honour, one can experience only God's Grace. For me, the proximity of the minor planet to Jupiter (Guru as per Hindu Astrology) is an indication that my Gurus willed it with their blessings. Music spreads love and unites souls. I am truly humbled, but this honour belongs to our divine Indian Classical Music, our great nation... Jai Ho."
