“Sujon Badiyar ghat” mesmerises Chittagong audience

A narrative drama “Sujan Badiyar Ghat”, penned by Palli Kobi Jasim Uddin played to a captivated audience at Shilpakala Academy Auditorium in the port city recently.
Artistes of Proma Abritti Sangathan, a prominent group of elocutionists in the city, mesmerised the audience with their verbal performances blended with sound effects, background music and lights. It was the tenth staging of the drama by the troupe.
Edited and adopted by Sharmistha Barua, “Sujan Badiyar Ghat” is a narrative of the love and woe of two youths from a marginalised gypsy community. The narrative drama also focuses on the upsurge of communalism and its ill effects.
Earlier, Rashed Hasan, head of Proma gave a brief description on the storyline and the poet Jasimuddin.
The story started with the entry of a narrator boatman with a lamp on stage. Later, he described how the mooring was named as “Sujan Badiyar Ghat”.
Directed by Kankan Das, 46 artistes participated in n the 70-minute long drama. Using variety of sounds and voices, different scenes like “lathi khela” and boat race were recreated on the stage.
Swapan Das played the role of narrator. Tajul Islam and Lipi Talukder enacted the roles of Sujan and Dulali which were praise worthy.
Rana Barua, Shimul Das accompanied on the dhol and flute. Bappa Chowdhury designed the lights.
