Green Genius: Search for a greener planet

Green Genius Season 2 took place on recently at Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB).  Organised by the Green Planet Club of IUB, the talent hunting competition sought to give students a platform to portray their ideas on making the planet more environmentally friendly and sustainable. Green Genius hosted its prize giving ceremony and a concert as well.  Chief guest, Dr Shykh Siraj, Founder Director & Head of News of Channel i,  along with the department heads of  the Environmental Science department of IUB handed over the prizes to the winners of three different categories ranging from school to university levels.



Under the school and college category, Fairooz Samia from South Breeze School swept away the top prize of BDT 25,000 and a winner's crest with her idea on managing plastic pollution by recycling energy through plastic eating bacteria. Nafisa Maliaut Eshamoni from Munshi Abdur Rouf Public School & College secured the second spot with her innovation of creating ink using waste fruit peels. The 2nd runner-up, Tasnim Enam from Aga Khan School enticed the judges by his idea of ensuring transportation efficiency through carpooling. Muhammad Ahnaaf Naaeer of Scholastica was awarded a special mention as well.



Under the university category, Tahsin Rahman of IUB received the first prize with his unique idea of recycling cigarette filters. Taking home the prize money of BDT 25,000, Tahsin believes his idea will be able to solve a critical environmental issue. From University of Dhaka, Fahmida Khanam Raha developed an idea of producing eco-friendly microbial fuel cell for remediation of sewage water to obtain the 1st runner up place. Kowshik Chakraborty from Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University secured the bronze medal with his idea of low cost microbial effluent treatment plant.



Over 300 students participated in this year's edition of Green Genius, hosted by IUB with a motto to find the top ideas on how to make Bangladesh more environmentally friendly. The participants had to submit abstracts online in the first phase which proceeded onto a poster presentation symposium round to decide the winners.



Dr Shykh Siraj stressed on the importance of youthful exuberance and innovations and thanked the Green Planet Club and Dean of SESM for organising such a platform for the environmental aspirers. The President of Green Planet Club, Sabbir Ahmed, also shared his views.  "The idea behind Green Genius was to enable more students to be aware of the current environmental problems and come up with their own creative solution for it," he said.
