Baghinee.com, a website dedicated to Bangladeshi sportswomen, was launched at Janata Tower Auditorium in Kawran Bazar, recently. Tina F Jabeen, Investment Adviser, Startup Bangladesh, ICT Ministry, Government of Bangladesh, and South Asian (SA) Games gold medalist Humayra Akhter Antora were present at the occasion as the chief guests, along with the website’s founders Mostafa Mohammad Quamrul Hassan and Amrita Hassan. Renowned journalist Abir Hassan and his wife Nasreen Hassan were also in attendance at the event.
The event started with an introductory session, initiated by Tina F Jabeen, where all the invited guests introduced themselves, spoke about their line of work and shared their expectations from the website. Following this session, the founders shared their story behind this initiative. “We have women athletes that have won gold on national and international platforms. However, how many of us remember these women for their achievements? Do we reward the players effectively when the Bangladesh women’s cricket team wins gold in the SA Games?” asserted Amrita Hassan. “This is why we came up with baghinee.com, where we will present stories of Bangladeshi female athletes.”
Baghinee.com will not only showcase stories of leading sportswomen, but also work to create an archive where information on all Bangladeshi sportswomen will be available. “December 10 is the birthday of Sultana Kamal, wife of Sheikh Kamal and one of Bangladesh's first women sports stars. However, very few people know about her record on the highest long-jump and even fewer people celebrate her achievements,’ mentions Quamrul Hassan. “We hope to facilitate readers with such aspiring stories. We will start with features first, and gradually develop baghinee.com as a news portal, featuring exclusive women sports articles only.”
The website, baghinee.com, was launched after the formal session. The founders are looking forward to introducing a magazine soon, where inspiring stories of women in sports will be featured. They also plan to transform this initiative into an organisation named Baghinee Foundation.
