ASR Food Cart: Turning passion into trade

Syeda Ramisa Khatun Rumi, 34, runs her Bengali cuisine cart in Dhanmondi 5/A, opposite University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh. With the help of her two children, Ayishi, 13, and Surjo, 8, she cycles every evening to work, carrying homemade dishes. Her husband passed away in 2010 in a bike accident.
ASR Food Cart, named for Allah, Sallalahu and Rasul, was opened in April 2015. It has been operating in areas around Dhanmondi, Mohammadpur and Kalabagan for four years. Before that, Rumi and her family sold coffee.
"The three of usused to walk all over Dhanmondi, carrying a flask of hot coffee. We could take a rickshaw back home only on the days in which we sold to a good number of customers," says Rumi.
Rumi invested into her passion forcooking in 2015. Initially, she placed her shop beside Dhanmondi Eidgah Mosque for the safety of her trolley. In May 2016, she moved into her current location. She encourages single mothers who are raising their children on their own to do things that their children can learn from. Initially, Rumi and her family faced many financial setbacks, but today, she has made a name for herself in the local food scene.
Rumi's daughter, Ayishi currently studies in the eighth grade and helps her mom in cooking food and running the cart. She aims to spread the message of Islam through her mom's food.
"Ammu is my favourite human being," says Ayishi. "One time, she went somewhere far away for work andI was worried about her. I kept praying for her safety."
People from Malaysia, Canada and Thailand have dropped by ASR Food Cart to try out the homemade food. Ayishi, who loves meeting new people, entertains the customers by recounting the stories of her younger brother.
Her brother, Surjo, currently studies in the fourth grade and dreams of becoming an engineer. Most of the time, he studies beside the cart, and he helps out with small tasks.
ASR Food Cart serves fresh and clean food to over thirty customers daily, with students and locals being their main consumers.
