Sketch: Yafiz Siddiqui

Born in Barcelona, Joan Miró i Ferrà , popularly known as Joan Miró was a Spanish painter, sculptor, and ceramicist. Growing up Miró spent a great deal of time around the sea port of Barcelona which later influenced many of his paintings and working style. As the son of a watchmaker and a goldsmith, Miró started creating art using various mediums from his early childhood. His work has been interpreted as Surrealism and his distinct style along with his experimentation with different unconventional mediums and forms helped him become one of the most celebrated Spanish artists. In 1975, Fundació Joan Miró, a museum dedicated to his work was established in his native city of Barcelona while a few years later another museum called the Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró was established in Palma de Mallorca.

"I try to apply colours like words that shape poems, like notes that shape music."

"Throughout the time in which I am working on a canvas I can feel how I am beginning to love it, with that love which is born of slow comprehension."

"For me an object is something living. This cigarette or this box of matches contains a secret life much more intense than that of certain human beings."
