DNCC deploys drones to identify Aedes breeding grounds on rooftops

Dhaka North City Corporation has deployed drones to identify mosquito breeding sites, especially on rooftop gardens of houses.

DNCC Chief Executive Officer Selim Reza launched the survey programme in Mohammadpur area around 11:00am this morning to identify accumulated water on rooftops.

He added that a month-long programme to expedite the ongoing fight against Aedes mosquitoes will start on July 8.

"The infestation of Aedes mosquitoes has increased during the monsoon. In response, the DNCC has decided to employ drones to survey whether water has accumulated on rooftops, aimed at eliminating Aedes mosquitoes," Reza said.

Over the next four days, five separate drones will be utilised to survey the rooftops of every house in the city.

Reza explained that due to the close proximity of houses in the city, conducting surveys by physically visiting each roof is not feasible.

"Instead, by utilising drones, it becomes possible to survey rooftops within an approximately two-kilometre area from a single location and the rooftops of houses across the entire city will be surveyed using the five drones," he added.

He added that mobile courts will also work to facilitate the survey activities.

If mosquito larvae are discovered on roofs of houses, immediate fines will be imposed, he said, urging residents to maintain cleanliness in their yards to avert breeding of Aedes mosquitoes, which carry the dengue virus.

The programme was attended by DNCC Chief Health Officer Brig Gen AKM Shafiqur Rahman, as well as some local councillors.
