Hidden Hero | Ep 05 | Shofikul Serves His Community With Exemplary Leadership

World Vision Bangladesh and The Daily Star jointly present to you "Hidden Hero" - a video series where we portray real stories of ordinary people with extraordinary impact during this global pandemic.

In the Fifth Episode, we look into the life of Shofikul Islam, who is an executive committee member of Moynerbag Mosque, President of Moynerbag development society, donor, and member of Sekandarbag Islamia Madrasa committee. He is also the President of the CHAT (Community Hope Action Team) Committee of Dhaka East AP. He and other committee members have played an active role in their society during the pandemic. When vulnerable families have been hit hard by the pandemic, their committee prepared the list of neediest persons in their area and went on to provide food support (Rice, Onion, Sugar, Oil, and Pulse) to over 1,000 families fully by the committee's own initiatives and funds.

Their committee has organized yard meeting to discuss the adverse effect of Coronavirus and the safety precautions. About 200 people were present there. After that, they organized two more meetings with more than 100 children & parents and about 30 to 40 youth representatives. "We also encourage people to watch Covid-19 related TV Channels programs for getting more updates. I have discussed the Government's decision about praying from home instead of Mosque during the Covid-19 pandemic period", Shafikul says.

Shafikul's exemplary leadership skills and passion for his community were instilled when he participated in a sensitization session of World Vision Covid 19 Emergency Response where he learned about the negative impacts of violence against children happening in the home, workplace, and schools. With inspirations gained from that event, Shafikul and his team rose beyond all the obstacles and stood beside their fellow neighbors during the pandemic. From distributing aid to delivering key awareness messages during Khutba (sermon on Friday prayer service) - Shafikul has highlighted the true power of being a community leader. To us, he has done everything not to be popular rather he is the true embodiment of a Hidden Hero - an ordinary person who has risen to make an extraordinary contribution, empowered by the proven experience of World Vision.
