‘Mayers’ wicket was the result of hard work’
Paceman Khaled Ahmed bagged a fifer for the first time in his career during the first innings against West Indies in the second Test at St Lucia yesterday. For Khaled, bagging the wicket of centurion Kyle Mayers on day three was special given that his plan had worked.
Khaled's slower delivery bamboozled Mayers, who played his shot way too early and was caught at mid on after a tremendous 146 off 208 deliveries. Khaled even gave Mayers a stare to show how much the wicket meant to him.
"Every wicket was special for me since I got five wickets for the first time. Specially the wicket of Mayers was the result of hard work. I had been trying from yesterday to get him out and today thankfully I got him out with my slower delivery," Khaled said regarding his first five-wicket haul in an innings during the press conference yesterday.
"It feels good that I could get him out with a plan," he added.
Khaled had picked up four wickets in an innings during the tour of South Africa and this time he wanted to take his opportunity. Khaled picked the final wicket of Jayden Seales to complete his fifer as Windies were able to add just 68 more runs to their overnight score of 340 for 5 and finish on 408 all out.
"Feeling really good that I got five wickets after a long time. I have tried for a while on how to go about taking five wickets. There was an opportunity before but I missed that and this time my wish was that it will happen this time. It feels good and I will try to continue," he said after finishing with five for 106.
He reiterated that the team is aware that they have to improve. Bangladesh are staring at down the barrel of another defeat with just four wickets left in their second innings, still trailing by 42 runs.
Khaled's performance in this innings was the only spark of joy on yet another disappointing day for Bangladesh in Test cricket.
"Every player wants that that their milestone is impactful and that it helps the team. We are not going through a good phase in Test cricket but there will be time in the future when things will go well. Everyone is trying their level best so that we can perform.
"There are room for improvement in every department. Our management is working hard for us. We are trying too," he said, hopeful of their hard work bearing fruit.
