Bangladesh's ace golfer Siddikur Rahman fell agonisingly short of the Bangladesh Bashundhara Open title today, finishing just four strokes behind Thailand's Jazz Janewattananond, who won his first title on the Asian Tour circuit, at the Kurmitola Golf Club (KGC).
Jazz, who led the scorecard from the start of the tournament, ended on a brilliant score of 17-under-par to take home the title, but the biggest story remained the turnaround from Siddikur.
The 32-year-old local had a frustrating outing on the first day as he finished with an even par score, while Jazz surged to the top with a seven-under-par.
Bearing the brunt of the hopes of the locals however, Siddikur surged back superbly on the second day, notching a five-under but remaining six strokes behind Jazz, who had climbed to 11-under.
The race for the championship had become even more exciting yesterday as Jazz slowed down from his breakneck speed and reached 13-under-par while Siddikur continued to soar, reaching a score of eight-under-par.
However, any hopes of a comeback by the Bangladeshi seemed unlikely after Jazz had carded four birdies to take his score to 17-under, meaning Siddikur would need to score birdies on at least half of the holes on the day just to tie scores.
To his credit, Siddikur made the final day a thriller, carding six birdies against a bogey.
