UGLY DISMISSAL FROM ELEGANT RIYAD
It was the perfect platform for skipper Mahmudullah Riyad to overcome his long lean patch in the longest format of the game as he resumed batting on the second day with a comfortable cushion of runs and with centurion Mushfiqur Rahim at the crease. Despite a few familiar lapses that saw him nudge the pacers away from his body, Mahmudullah overcame the initial struggle and was about to flourish. He had already faced 109 deliveries and was set at the crease on 36, but the elegant batsman played an ugly push to a short-pitched Kyle Jarvis delivery that started well outside off stump and shaped away a touch. Instead of either going for a full-blooded shot or letting the ball go, he succumbed to the indecision that has plagued him throughout his Test career.
UNLUCKY, FRUSTRATED KHALED
There was a lot of talk about new Bangladesh fast bowler Khaled Ahmed with head coach Steve Rhodes full of praise for the tall quickie. The 25-year-old did get his debut in the second Test in Mirpur where the fast bowler bowled his first over in the last hour of the day after Bangladesh declared the innings. Khaled immediately made an impression in the second over of the innings, bowling three consecutive bouncers with the first one fired at the throat of Hamilton Masakadza, who managed to duck just in time. The seamer almost got his maiden Test wicket in the very next over when Masakadza edged an away-swinging length delivery to the slip cordon which was heading towards Mohammad Mithun at first slip, but Ariful at second slip dove wildly to his left and got in the way, turning what was an attempt at a spectacular take into an epic fail. Poor Khaled was in disbelief and covered his face with his jersey perhaps recognising that as the rookie he could not really lash out.
