'I'm sorry I couldn't bring you another Cup': Scaloni pens emotional message

Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni has shared an emotional message on social media following his departure from his hometown of Pujato, expressing gratitude for the support he received after Argentina's defeat to Spain in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final.

Seven days after the final in the United States, Mexico and Canada, Scaloni reflected on the disappointment of missing out on another world title while thanking fans, players and staff for standing by the team.

"I'm sorry I couldn't bring you another Cup," Scaloni wrote on Instagram, in a post that quickly attracted hundreds of thousands of reactions and messages of support.

The 48-year-old described the emotional aftermath of the final, saying: "Sadness and joy have intertwined, tears and smiles, anguish and tranquility."

Scaloni praised the commitment of his squad, revealing that he often refers to his players as "my warriors" in conversations with his wife. He said their resilience throughout the tournament was a source of pride despite the defeat.

The coach also addressed criticism directed at the team during the World Cup, writing that they had endured "buckets of cold water (FROM PEOPLE WHO DON'T KNOW US)." He said overcoming such challenges represented "the true trophy" for the squad.

Scaloni extended his thanks to his coaching staff, the players and the Argentine Football Association (AFA) personnel, including those working behind the scenes to ensure the team had the best possible conditions throughout the tournament.

He ended his message with a line that quickly gained traction on social media: "Whoever has an Argentine friend has a treasure."

The post has also renewed speculation over Scaloni's future with the national team. His current contract expires in December, and he has yet to confirm whether he will continue in the role. Earlier this year, Scaloni suggested he could step down after his deal ends.

The AFA, however, is reportedly keen to retain the World Cup-winning coach and is expected to offer him a contract extension through 2030.
