Comic side to Mushy-Miraz’s partnership
Bangladesh wicket-keeper-batsman Mushfiqur Rahim gave a humorous account of his stay at the crease along with Mehedi Miraz today. Mushfiqur shared a 144-run eighth-wicket partnership with Miraz and it allowed him to go on and make the highest individual score for a Bangladesh batsman in Test cricket.
Mushfiqur, full of humour, recounted the moments of the partnership, especially how Miraz kept telling him things during the partnership which made it look like the all-rounder was the one who was batting on 200.
"I always enjoy batting with Miraz because he is a lovely fellow. One of the funny characters and it is always enjoyable to have a player like him on the field. And the way he was explaining things to me, it felt like he was the one batting on 200 and I was on 30," Mushfiqur said.
The usually serious Mushfiqur saw the funny and vibrant side of things while batting and he in turn reminded Miraz not get out while he was chasing a double hundred. The younger partner sometimes has a rush of blood but Mushfiqur's reminders led to an unbeaten 68 from Miraz – his highest score in Test cricket. Mushfiqur said that Miraz understands everything and yet funnily enough he would come to Mushfiqur and talk about what he did wrong.
"He knows everything," Mushfiqur said with a laugh. "If he plays a ball away from his body he comes and tells me, 'Bhai, I actually just played away from my body.' I tell him that 'why did you do it when you know?'," Mushfiqur said. "I always have fun with him," Mushfiqur said with a bright smile.
During the tour of Sri Lanka last year, Mushfiqur missed out on a hundred, as he ran out of partners. Miraz was batting well on 41 before he got out leg-before to Herath. There was no way Mushfiqur wanted to run out of partners again while he was looking for a record-breaking landmark and he kept reminding Miraz to accompany him through the achievement.
"It feels really good that I was with him during his two Test 50s. He missed another one, 45 I think it was in the first Test in Galle. I missed a hundred too because of that, he got out and I ran out of partners. So I was reminding him today, that at least stay with me till the 200," Mushfiqur said.
