Athletic C'ships from today
The 34th National Junior Athletic Championships will get underway today at the Bangabandhu National Stadium with budding athletes from across the country vying for glory in 39 events.
Approximately 400 boys and girls from 64 districts, eight divisions, educational boards and the Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protisthan, were split into four groups for the junior championships which will feature three new events -- the 1500m run, discus throw and 400X4 metre rally -- this time around, informed Abdur Rakib Montu, ad-hoc committee general secretary of the Bangladesh Athletics Federation (BAF), at a press conference yesterday.
“We have been working relentlessly after putting behind the disappointment in athletics but we can't go forward much due to financial constraints and it is not possible to go far without direct patronization from the government,” said Montu, who claimed that they had sent athletes to 20 different countries to participate in meets in the last 18 months.
“I am extremely satisfied and very happy with my sporting career. What we have done in the last 18 months did not happen before. We came out of ostracism at the international arena by sending a lot of athletes to international meets which you can count as our success,” said BAF ad-hoc committee president Ali Kabir, who was also the president of the previous elected committee.
However, Ali failed to provide any information that could reflect the federation's development activities for country's dying athletics scene.
