Held last Sunday, 18 February, at London's Royal Albert Hall, the 71st annual British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) awarded promising and noteworthy films, documentaries and media personalities who made a name for themselves in 2017. While The Shape of Water made splashes by having a whopping 12 nominations in different categories, it was the drama film Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri that received the most spotlight, with nine nominations and five award wins in a number of categories. Directed by the British-Irish director Martin McDonagh, the film was given the “Best Film”, “Best Original Screenplay” and “Outstanding British Film” awards. Frances McDormand won the “Best Actress in a Leading Role” and Sam Rockwell won the “Best Actor in a Supporting Role” awards for this film as well. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri received considerable praise from fans and critics alike since its release, and it has received multiple awards in Golden Globes this year as well. Is this a sign of things to come in Oscars? Only time will tell.
