Prof. Sayeed speaks at pre-convocation assembly of EDU
Prof. Abdullah Abu Sayeed, founder of Bishwo Shahitto Kendro said that love for others lead to mental and intellectual development of the society and community.
He was speaking in a pre-convocation assembly of East Delta University (EDU) held on February 28, 2019 in the assembly hall of the university as chief guest.
Prof. Sayeed said that the source of enlightenment is fire. And fire comes from knowledge leading to creation of a knowledgeable community. While responding to the question of a student, he said, it is natural to have dreams and you should dream big, but not to become big. Ambition is greed, and greed leads to unhealthy competition.
Prof. Muhammad Sikandar Khan, VC presided over the pre-convocation assembly. Registrar Sajal Kanti Barua conducted the programme. Treasurer Prof. Sams-Ud-Doha; Director General Syed Shafiquddin Ahmed; Deans, faculty members, students and administrative staff were also present in this pre-convocation assembly.
IUB hosts seminar by Prof. Paul Connett
Independent University Bangladesh (IUB) hosted Emeritus Prof. Paul Connett of St. Lawrence University, New York for a seminar held at IUB Auditorium in Bashundhara, Dhaka on February 25, 2019. Prof. Connett, a British national received the "Friends of Liberation War Honor" from the Government of Bangladesh for his invaluable contribution during the country's Liberation War in 1971.
Abdul Hai Sarker, Chairman, ESTCDT, IUB; Members of the Board of Trustee; Prof. M. Omar Rahman, VC, IUB; Prof. Milan Pagon, Pro-VC, IUB; and environmental activist Ellen Connett were also present on the occasion.
Expressing deepest gratitude to the Government of Bangladesh, Prof. Paul Connett, through his presentation briefly described the chronology of war from Vietnam to Bangladesh. Having defined gruesomeness and damaging side of war, he urged the audience to raise voice against any kind of war.
Currently, Prof. Connett and his wife are working as environmental activists. In this regard, Prof. Connett highlighted the devastating part of fluoride that creates high risk of damaging brains and contributing towards future generation's loath intelligence.
At the outset Prof. Rahman, VC, IUB in his welcome remarks, expressed his deepest gratitude to Prof. and Mrs. Connett for coming to IUB and sharing their global experience. Deans, senior members of the faculty and administration and full house of students attended the seminar.
PTE Academic awards quiz competition winners
Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic) awarded the winners of a quiz competition in a programme held at its Dhanmondi test centre on February 27, 2019. Three top scorers received free scored practice test vouchers. The winners are Asif Aftab Shezan from Notre Dame College, Fatiha Ormin Naser from Shaheed Bir Uttam Lt. Anwar Girls' College, and Tasfia Islam Akhi from BAF Shaheen College Dhaka. Over 200 students from 66 institutions participated the quiz competition on PTE Academic on February 21, 2019 at Notre Dame College.
M Jahir Uddin, Regional Development Manager of PTE Academic, BTEC and Higher Ed resources handed over the PTE Academic scored practice test vouchers to the winners and thanked all the students who participated the quiz contest. Sabreen Siraz, Manager, Business Development, Academy and Management System, TÜV SÜD Bangladesh (Pvt.) Ltd was also present in the prize giving ceremony. PTE Academic is trusted by universities, colleges and government around the world.
Deshi Ballers observes International Women's Day with basketball tournament
Deshi Ballers is organising 3x3 Basketball Tournament on March 9, 2019 to observe the International Women's Day which is held each year on March 8. The event will take place at the Gulshan Youth Club, Dhaka with 12 participating teams.
Save & Serve Foundation are the title sponsor of the event with SHOUT, The Daily Star as the Print Partner and Colours 101.6 FM as Radio Partner. Event partners for the event include Studio Dorset and Tanvir Ali Photography.
Deshi Ballers was founded by Ashreen Mridha, shooting guard and former captain of Bangladesh Women's National Basketball team and Gulnahar Mahbub Monika, who plays power forward for Bangladesh Women's Basketball team. The organisation focuses on women of all ages through their various initiatives, providing them with a chance to find their identity and voice through sports activities.
Serve & Serve is a non-profit and non-government charitable organisation, built to foster inclusive communities in Bangladesh by promoting religious tolerance.
EU qualifies for International Law Moot Court Competition
Eastern University (EU) Mooting Team has qualified for the international round of Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition 2019. The international round will be held in Washington D.C., USA, in March 31 - April 6, 2019.
The national round was jointly organised by the International Law Students Association (ILSA) Bangladesh, the Office of Overseas Prosecutorial Development Assistance and Training (OPDAT) - US Department of Justice (DoJ), TEER- City Group, Independent University Bangladesh, and Bangladesh Chapter of the Asian Society of International Law (AsianSIL Bangladesh).
As many as 31 public and private universities participated in the competition. EU and the University of Dhaka went against each other in the final round.
The EU team consists of Wardi Zaman, Rashna Sharmin Riya, and Nowshi Zaman who are mentored by ABM Imdadul Haque Khan, Chairperson and Assistant Professor of the Department of Law. The Office of Overseas Prosecutorial Development Assistance and Training (OPDAT) - US Department of Justice (DoJ), USA will sponsor the finalist teams for the International Round.
SEU presents Literature Award 2018
In order to inspire literature and cultural studies and to recognise the contribution of literary workers and their creative talent in Bangla literature, Southeast University (SEU) has started awarding in the name of "Southeast University Literature Award" since 2017. On the occasion of Literature Award, an event was organized at its permanent campus on February 11, 2018.
Following the previous trail, Southeast University Literature Award 2018 is going to be held on March 9, 2019 at National Art Gallery Auditorium, Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy of the capital. Prof. Dr. ANM Meshquat Uddin, VC of SEU will preside over the programme. MA Mannan MP, Planning Minister, Govt. of the People's Republic of Bangladesh will grace the session as chief guest. KM Khalid MP, State Minister, Ministry of Cultural Affairs, will be present as special guest. Md. Rezaul Karim, Chairman, BOT, SEU Trust will be the guest of honour. This year the award will be given to eminent novelist Selina Hossain and distinguished essayist Abul Momen for their contribution in the field of literature. Prof. Abdullah Abu Sayeed, founder and chairman of Bishwo Shahitto Kendro and Emeritus Professor Dr. Serajul Islam Choudhury will be awarded lifetime achievement gold medal.
This award is given in various branches of literature, and selected according to the jury board decision where National Professor Dr. Anisuzzaman and former Director General of Bangla Academy Prof. Shamsuzzaman Khan are members.
CUB holds 8th Syndicate Meeting
A syndicate meeting was held at Canadian University of Bangladesh (CUB) on March 2, 2019. Dr. Chowdhury Nafeez Sarafat, Chairman of BOT, CUB; Prof. MA Arafat, Chief Advisor; Professor Emeritus Dr. Atiur Rahman, Virtual Dean, Advisor and former Governor of Bangladesh Bank; Prof. Md. Mahbubur Rahman, Member; Shahnul Hasan Khan, Executive Chairman; Prof. Dr. Mohammad Mahfuzul Islam, VC; Prof. Dr. Nazrul Islam, Pro-VC; Prof. William H. Derrenger, Dean, School of Business; and Brig. Gen. Md. Asaduzzaman Subhani (Retd.), Registrar; and Bahauddin Muhammad Isa, Additional Registrar attended the meeting.
