Why so many India tours, BNP asks PM

The BNP today raised a question regarding the motive of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's repeated India visits when she could not even put the much-cherished Teesta-water staring issue in agenda.

"Why she (prime minister) is visiting India? There is a rumour in the people's minds over the visit," BNP Standing Committee Member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain made the remarks without clarifying further details about the rumour.

Mosharraf came up with the remarks at a discussion at the National Press Club in Dhaka when Premier Sheikh Hasina was conferred the honorary DLitt degree at Kazi Nazrul University in Asansol in recognition of her outstanding contributions towards building exploitation and disparity-free society.

Alleging that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been hanging on to power with the grace of the neighbouring country, Mosharraf said she (PM) visited India several times during the nine years of her administration but failed to ink the long-cherished Teesta water sharing deal.

"People expect that the Teesta water sharing issue with India will be solved whenever the prime minister visits India. But, she failed to put the issue on the agenda during the ongoing visit," he said.

The present government in Bangladesh is not supported by the people and thus India does not fulfil the people’s aspiration, he opined.

Anti-drug drive: Govt keeps godfathers out of scene

Khandaker Mosharraf said the government is conducting the anti-narcotics drives across the country with an aim to keep the godfathers of the drug racket out of sight.

Referring to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's special envoy HM Ershad's speech that the godfathers of drugs are in the parliament, Mosharraf said then why the government is not taking any action against them.

Besides, in a press conference at the party's Nayapaltan central office, BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Rizvi Ahmed claimed that at least 75 people were killed in the hands of the law enforcement agencies during the recent drive against narcotics.

Calling upon the government to stop killing the people in the name of anti-narcotics drives across the country, he said the government has created a horrific situation in the country and turned it into a deserted land.

Describing the situation as a matter of grave concern, Rizvi said the government is fulfilling its desire while the members of the law enforcement agencies are engaged in earning money ahead of the Eid-ul-Fitr.
