Man killed in ‘gunfight’ with police while trying to snatch away arrestee
A man was killed in a "gunfight" while trying to snatch away his brother -- who was arrested by police -- at Mithapanir Bazar area of Cox's Bazar's Teknaf Sadar upazila today.
Police yesterday arrested fugitive Shamsul Alam (35), who is accused in several cases, our Cox's Bazar correspondent reports quoting Mohammad Hasanuzzaman, superintendent of police of Cox's Bazar.
They were returning to the police station with Shamsul when a group of armed criminals including Md Khorshed Alam, younger brother of arrestee Shamsul, attacked police in an attempt to snatch him away, said Hasanuzzaman.
Police fired shots at them in self-defence triggering a "gunfight" and later found an injured Khorshed on the spot. They sent him to Teknaf Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead.
Khorshed Alam was an accused in eight cases which included narcotics case and arms case, SP Hasanuzzaman added.
The SP also said other criminals managed to flee the scene. Three police personnel received injuries during the gunfight.
Two cases are under process in this connection, he added.
