Embezzling land development tax: Khulna land official gets 3yrs in jail
A court in Khulna today sentenced a land official to three years in prison in a case filed for embezzling Tk 99,056 of land development tax without depositing it to the government treasury.
The convict is Begum Ayesha Akhter, deputy assistant land officer, said Bijan Kumar Roy, inspector (court) of Anti-corruption Commission (ACC) in Khulna.
Zia Haider, judge of Khulna Divisional Special Judge's Court delivered the verdict in presence of Ayesha Akhter in the court, our Khulna correspondent reports quoting the inspector.
The court also ordered the convict to return the embezzled money to the government treasury, in default to suffer her three months more in jail.
Another accused in the case Sheikh Moniruzzaman was acquitted as the allegation brought against him could not be proved.
According to the prosecution, the ACC filed a case against Ayesha Akhter and Sheikh Moniruzzaman for misappropriating Tk 99,056 for land development tax while she was working in the land office (Tahosil) of Bagerhat district in 2014-15.
Ayesha was suspended from the job for her alleged involvement in the crime and was on bail.
Later, Mahatab Uddin, assistant director of ACC submitted a charge sheet to a Khulna court after an investigation.
