Thick smoke billowed above Brazil's Amazon jungle as fire tore through butchered rainforest and discarded trees littered the scorched earth like dead matchsticks, burnt and black.

At least 20,000 people living in different shoals of Teesta River and surrounding low lying areas in Dimla and Jaldhaka upazilas of Nilphamari were marooned as water level in the river started to increase from this morning.

The water level of Brahmaputra River was flowing 50 cm above danger level at Chilmari point of Kurigram this morning which has further deteriorated the overall flooding in Kurigram.

Flood-hit people will continue to suffer a few more days as the floods in low lying areas of 11 districts will not wane until second week of September, said the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (ffwc).

Two Rohingyas died in a lightning strike in Cox’s Bazar’s Ukhia early today. Three others were injured in the incident.

Ida pushed so much water into the mouth of the Mississippi that it reversed the flow of the mighty river and blacked out New Orleans, taking down backup electricity for the city’s crucial pumping system.

Erosion has taken a serious turn in Manikganj and Tangail as flood water continues increasing in the Padma and Jamuna rivers, devouring more fresh areas.

Hundreds of people are afraid of losing their houses and land, as water levels of Jamuna, Dhaleshwari and Jhenai rivers have been rising above the danger level, flooding most of Tangail district.

Many areas of the country’s northern and north-central districts have been facing inundation as adjoining rivers continue to swell.

Sudden collapse of an approach road, connecting Bhakterbari Bridge in Panchagarh’s Boda upazila, due to landslide caused by flash flood has left thousands of people of five unions under three upazilas of the district in immense sufferings.  

Unabated erosion by Teesta, Dharla, Brahmaputra and Dudhkumar has devoured eight primary schools in the last one month and 25 more schools are on the verge of extinction in Kurigram and Lalmonirhat districts.

Teesta river in Kurigram and Lalmonirhat and Brahmaputra, Dharla and Jamuna in Sirajganj are flowing over the danger-level due to rain and water from upstream. Many other rivers’ water-levels were also rising.
